The secret behind: the magic of Unicode characters
Perhaps you are curious, where do these fonts come from? In fact, strictly speaking, they are not "fonts" in the true sense, but special styles generated with the help of massive Unicode characters. Simply put, it is to use Unicode character graphics that meet Instagram compatibility standards to achieve a variety of text effects. Want to learn more about Unicode? Read on and you will find out.
What is Unicode?
All data in the computer is stored in binary form (0 and 1). Every text you see now is a combination of 0 and 1 in the server. This data is transmitted from the server to your browser, and the browser needs "Understanding" them is the key to correct display.
In the early days of computer development, there was no unified standard for character encoding, and different developers and organizations had their own ideas about correspondences such as "01100001 represents a" and "01100010 represents b". It was not until the 1980s that the Unicode organization was established to promote a globally unified text character standard.
However, the promotion of Unicode has not been smooth sailing. Since various organizations are unwilling to completely transform their systems for the new standards, Unicode can only add a large number of symbol sets to be compatible with old systems. Over time, the number of symbols has expanded from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, and it is still increasing today—even the emoji we commonly use are the result of continuous updates by the Unicode Working Group. It is these various symbols, allowing us to play with various text styles.
Is it a font or a symbol?
The basic text you see now are all ASCII characters, which are the first 128 symbols in Unicode. But there are a huge number of symbols in Unicode, many of which look very similar to Latin letters (commonly used letters in English). We took advantage of this and created a "pseudo-alphabet" - they look like ordinary text, but have special effects such as bold, italics, and flip.
These "alphabets" are actually a "little trick": from more than 100,000 symbols in Unicode, symbols with matching styles are selected and pieced together, so they are not perfect.
You should know that "font" refers to a set of graphics corresponding to Unicode characters (such as the common "Comic Sans” and “Arial”), and the special text you copy here is essentially a separate character - just like “a” and “b”, but with a more distinctive look.
Why can I copy and paste it to Instagram?
This is the key! If these special styles were just regular fonts, they wouldn’t be able to be copied and pasted to Instagram at all. Because the display of regular fonts depends on the platform settings: if you write text in “Comic Sans” on a website, when you copy it to Instagram, it will only be displayed as regular text in its default font.
But if you use Unicode characters themselves - these characters have their own bold, handwritten and other styles, the situation is different. They can “simulate” the font effect, and the style can be consistent no matter which platform you copy it to.
So strictly speaking, this tool should be called “Instagram pseudo font generator”, but the current name is simpler and easier to remember, and it can also make people understand the purpose at a glance~ That’s why you can easily use these “fonts” on Instagram.
Note: Some styles may not be compatible
Sometimes You may find that some fonts don't show up on Instagram. This is because Instagram filters out special characters, probably to avoid overly fancy symbols (such as those in some "glitch-style" text).
